Humble Beginnings
Greater St. John Church of God in Christ a legacy of love, faith, and holiness that spans 7 decades. Founded by Missionary Gladys Corrine Bradford, the church opened its doors at 305 N. Main St., as St. John Holiness Mission in 1941.
Missionary Bradford and 10 others served as the charter members of the church. Later that year, Elder John Edward Ward became the 1st Pastor of the church. The Mission was a place of worship, prayer, and the sharing of God’s word.
In this location the church grew to over 70 members. In 1944, the church moved to 38 Harker St. and became St. John COGIC. The ministry continued to thrive and grow under Elder Ward’s leadership. On the second Sunday of July 1960 members marched to 190 Chester Ave., where the church’s name became Greater St. John COGIC.
